OPEN FOR BUSINESS!
Wirral Independent Recycling Enterprise
enjoyed a red-letter day when the Mayor Wirral, Councillor Christine Meaden, officially opened the project on Friday 30th
September 2005!
Over 100 guests including representatives
from local
residents groups, voluntary bodies, the local authority, supporters from the community and business sectors and
councilors from across the whole of Wirral come together to share in the success of the organization to date.
WIRE works by collecting items of unwanted
furniture, free of charge, from any residence in the Wirral and making them available to everyone, but particularly those
who find it difficult to secure furniture and white goods to help turn their houses, rooms or flats into real homes. A spokesperson
said, “WIRE aims to help individuals and families across Wirral who are supported by agencies such as Social Services,
local community groups, voluntary organizations and charities. Not only that, but there are lots of people in our communities
who do not receive support and yet are still on low or fixed incomes. WIRE is here to help these people too, and using items
of furniture that others don’t want anymore.”
The month of October has seen yet further
progress with the purchase of a brand new vehicle part funded by Job Centre Plus and the Merseyside Social Enterprise Initiative.
This will double the capacity of the not-for-profit organization to collect and distribute items which would otherwise simply
go into local landfill sites.
WIRE is now very definitely established
as a truly environmentally friendly alternative to disposal which enables Wirral residents to help their own community and
protect their own environment. Every penny generated from the sales of furniture by the project goes toward building a sustainable
future and promoting a recycling and re-use culture in Wirral.
